For over 40 years, Loro Piana has been committed to sourcing the highest quality Mongolian cashmere and has established itself as a historic advocate of cashmere excellence. In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, we have our only manufacturing facility outside of Italy where we process cashmere fibers. At the same time, we foster long-term relationships with local cooperatives and work with skilled local herders to continue and preserve centuries of fiber sourcing traditions. The initiative is focused on promoting and strengthening nomadic livelihoods in five districts (also known as sums) of Mongolia’s highly vulnerable Sukhbaatar Province, aiming to build supply chain resilience while protecting the biodiversity of Mongolia’s eastern steppe region, one of the few intact grassland ecosystems in the world. The region is severely affected by climate change, especially the extreme winter storms known as dzuds, which prevent grazing and limit access to feed and water, resulting in widespread livestock losses and severe impacts on people’s health. As part of Loro Piana’s long-standing commitment to biodiversity conservation, animal welfare and people’s empowerment, the brand launched the Resilient Threads program. The program was brought to life after two years of preparatory work, in partnership with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Sustainable Fiber Alliance (SFA) and the Odyssey Conservation Trust (OCT), with the expertise of cooperatives and local
pastoralists. Based on comprehensive research focused on understanding climate-related risks, the program aligns with Mongolia’s economic, climate, biodiversity and equity goals. From the beginning of the project, we have been working with the government, local partners, and pastoral cooperatives to design and assess priority needs and strategies. The program adopts a holistic “One Health” approach that sees the well-being and health of people, animals, and the environment as interconnected. This year, the program will establish its first mobile One Health Hub, which will travel to remote areas with vehicles to provide a range of services, including preventive care and vaccination campaigns in conjunction with government health programs, training, and awareness-raising on health issues. Additionally, a biodiversity center will promote the health of pastures. Establish a seed bank to protect and cultivate plants essential to the
interconnected well-being of the environment, animals and people: plants that combat soil erosion and climate change, have active pharmaceutical ingredients that are effective for medicine, or plants that are linked to food chains and allow people to diversify their livelihoods. For Loro Piana, sourcing the world’s highest quality raw materials is not only essential, but also a strategic priority. That is why the Maison invests heavily in the regions and communities where it operates. From Peru to Mongolia to New Zealand, Loro Piana works closely with sourcing partners around the world, providing long-term support to strengthen local production capacities and ensure the continuity of its high-quality supply chain. These partnerships are essential to the Maison’s operations, whose business resilience depends on the well-being and stability of the people who produce its raw materials. The project is fully aligned with LIFE 360, the LVMH Group’s environmental strategy, which promotes responsible sourcing and the active protection of ecosystems. The Group and its Maisons are committed to avoid sourcing in areas at risk of deforestation and desertification and to restoring 5 million hectares of natural habitats by 2030. The Resilient Thread is the concrete expression of these commitments, built on partnerships and implemented on the ground.
