“Icelandic-Japanese Perspectives on Gender Equality” was held in the “WA” space of the “Women’s Pavilion in collaboration with Cartier” at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. Hathra Tomasdottir, President of Iceland, who has a background in finance and was the first female CEO of the Icelandic Chamber of Commerce before moving into politics and becoming the second female president in history, took the stage. Together with journalist Sayuri Daimon, who acted as moderator, she spoke about women’s empowerment and actions toward a sustainable society, drawing on her own journey and experiences. Cartier established the
international program “Cartier Women’s Initiative (CWI)” to support female entrepreneurs in 2006. It continues to recognize and award female changemakers who are trying to open up the world and bring about change with their own power, and provide them with economic, human, and social support. To date, we have supported 330 women entrepreneurs from 66 countries, and President Hattra Tomasdottir was a 2009 fellow, so it was a delightful opportunity for us to call her to action together from the “WA” space in the Women’s Pavilion after 16 years.
