The main event will be an exciting offshore sailing race on June 11th, sailing 241 nautical miles from Saint-Tropez to Genoa via the Giraglia Rocks in northern Corsica. As in previous years, Pier Luigi Loro Piana, Vice Chairman of the Maison, will race with his crew on the fifth yacht in the series, named My Song. The format remained more or less the same, but in the 1970s the number of participating boats was always over 100, sometimes even over 150. This is an extraordinary number considering the niche field of yacht racing. Until the 1990s, the start and finish points alternated between Italy and France. In an era when the entire crew slept on board and participated in the boat’s movements, it was a semi-adventure to participate. The Giraglia witnessed the transition from wood to fiberglass, and boats became increasingly lighter, more sophisticated and faster. The format of the race has remained unchanged since 1998. We meet in Saint-Tropez in mid-June, race for three days on the beautiful bay coast, and have a beach party that is always memorable for all participants on the night before we go offshore. Then the next morning, we set off for the long 241 nautical miles, always passing through Giraglia and finishing in Genoa, just like in 1952.
