The second store of “GOOD EDITION”, a new souvenir business launched in February 2025, will be opened in Kyoto. We will propose sophisticated items and spaces that go beyond the boundaries of traditional souvenirs. The newly opened Kyoto store is a quaint townhouse that has been renovated into a modern store. It offers a new souvenir experience by fusing the warmth of traditional Japanese architecture with the refined sensibility unique to GOOD EDITION. The townhouse, built before 1950 and used as a kimono shop, was renovated. The exterior was restored to the good old appearance of a Kyoto townhouse by adding plastering to the tiled walls and creating a large roof, while the interior was unified with a gray color scheme to create a modern space while keeping the architectural structure intact. Kamiya’s comment: “A tranquil gray space and the soft light of lanterns at night. Making use of a 100-year-old townhouse and storehouse, we have recreated the beauty of Kyoto’s “transition” and “space” with a modern sensibility, with a large atrium at the center. The design is designed so that the presence of products and people resonates with the space.” Architect Shuhei Kamiya: SHUHEI KAMIYA After studying under Kengo Kuma and Bjarke Ingels (BIG) and working on projects both in Japan and overseas, he founded Kamiya Architects in 2017. Through architecture, space, and design direction, he explores the “space” and “sensibility design” that are necessary in the modern era. His major awards include the Architectural Institute of Japan’s New Designer Award, the Japan Space Design Award Gold Prize, and the Good Design Award.
