During his university days, editor Masayuki Ozawa took a year off to study English in Philadelphia, USA. During his stay, he bought clothes, sneakers, and records locally and made pocket money by selling them as parallel imports. At the time, the Internet was not yet widespread, and Ozawa set the selling price in Japan based on the prices of sneakers featured in the street magazine “BOON” sold locally. This sparked his interest in “people who choose the things to feature in magazines,” and after returning to Japan, he went to a vocational school to become an editorial designer and experienced working as an assistant to a stylist, searching for a way to do so. At that time, he happened to come across a job posting in “BOON” and applied. This opened the door to his career as a fashion writer. At first, he was not recognized for his work, and he had a hard time because of the performance-based compensation system. One day, when he was worried about his future, he was asked to take snapshots on the street and wrote “writer” in the occupation column, which led to him starting to work as a writer for other magazines. From there, his talent blossomed and he began to stand out. After that, Ozawa continued to work in the editorial department until BOON ceased publication in 2008, while also working as a freelancer in other media. He has been working at the forefront as an editor for over 25 years. In this interview, we asked him about his encounter with sneakers in his youth, his difficult time at BOON, the background to his book publishing and company
establishment, and more. Please listen to both parts until the end! ▶Radio distribution destination:https://lit.link/nipporizemi Listen to the radio here

This is a radio program where we invite people with multiple titles as guests and learn about “careers” and “culture”. The name of the program, “Nippori Seminar”, was chosen with the hope that we would all grow together by teaching each other, like a university seminar or study group. We deliver new episodes every week, divided into “main episodes” where we invite various guests and ask about their experiences and thoughts, and
“supplementary episodes” where LAMM members delve deeper into the culture that LAMM representative Kota Futamura is interested in. We are accepting questions and comments on the X hashtag “#Nippori Seminar”!

Ozawa came to the BOON editorial department in his fourth year of university with the dream of working in fashion through publishing, but at first, his work was not recognized and he had a difficult time. In the midst of all this, he felt a sense of crisis that “if I continue to stay in my familiar environment, I will not be able to grow,” so he left his parents’ home and has continued to challenge himself to push himself. His attitude of always looking down on his life and calmly observing it is very impressive. In the first part, he talked about his experiences with his colleague Futamura from his time at BOON, and his journey from his youth to studying abroad in the United States. In the second part, we talk in depth about what led to the founding of the company, the background to the publication of the book, and his vision for the future.

“manufacturing” Ozawa’s vision for the future is to continue making books as a life’s work, and to edit the core thoughts and images of the company he founded, “MANUSKRIPT,” not only through words but also through “manufacturing.” He has now launched an EC site that sells fashion accessories such as socks and bags, and has started selling at his own pace. He plans to increase the number of products he sells in the future, so keep an eye on his future developments! Sold
