IWC Schaffhausen presents the Portugieser Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph. Limited to 100 pieces, this watch combines three complications: a flying-minute tourbillon, a retrograde date and a flyback chronograph. The 43.5 mm case is made of 18 ct Armor Gold®, which is significantly harder than conventional gold alloys. The obsidian-coloured dial is the result of a complex manufacturing process that involves the application of 15 layers of transparent lacquer. The sapphire-glass back reveals the
IWC-manufactured 89900 calibre movement with a gold rotor. In 2024, IWC Schaffhausen introduces new design codes for the Portugieser collection, including new signature colors. Named Horizon Blue, Dune, Obsidian and Silver Moon, these colors reflect the eternal cycle of day and night and the constant flow of time. Now, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC is introducing new models with three
complications and obsidian-colored dials. The Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph (Ref. IW394009), limited to 100 pieces, features a case, pushers and crown made of 18 ct Armor Gold(R). Thanks to its improved microstructure, this material is significantly harder than conventional gold alloys. The obsidian-colored dial is created through a complex process that involves 60 steps in the manufacture. 15 layers of transparent lacquer give the watch an incredible sense of depth and a three-dimensional appearance. The dial features
gold-plated hands and gold applied indexes. The watch is presented on a black alligator strap made by Santoni, an Italian luxury leather manufacturer, in 18 ct Armor Gold(R) with a folding clasp. Image

This complex mechanism consists of a pallet and escape wheel housed in a small cage, which rotates once every minute. Its continuous rotation reduces the effects of gravity on the watch’s oscillating system, resulting in a more accurate rate. The flying-minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock weighs just 0.675 grams and is made up of 56 individual parts. It is fitted with a tourbillon stop mechanism, which allows the mechanism to be stopped completely and the time to be set to the nearest second. The pallet and escape wheel are made of silicon and are coated with IWC’s exclusive Diamond Shell® technology. This reduces friction and improves the flow of energy within the movement, ensuring an impressive power reserve of 68 hours.

A small hand indicates the current date on an arched scale and when it reaches the end of the month, it jumps back to the starting position. The hours and minutes measured by the third complication, the flyback chronograph, are displayed in a counter at 12 o’clock. The flyback chronograph allows you to restart the measurement very quickly while the chronograph is running. When you press the chronograph push button, the chronograph hands are immediately reset to zero and a new measurement begins. The Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph is equipped with the highly sophisticated IWC-manufactured automatic movement, calibre 89900, which is made up of 375 individual
components. The sapphire-glass back offers a view of the movement, which is decorated with Côtes de Genève and circular graining. The rotor of the automatic winding mechanism is made of gold.
