With time, patience and collaboration with my artisans, I finally arrived at the perfect oval shape, modern yet delicate, geometric yet alive,” says Marina Lorenzi. Rather than the typical round, pyramidal, or square studs, Lorenzi worked with metal artisans to develop a new vision. Starting with 3D modeling and resin prototyping, Lorenzi attached each prototype to an actual bag to check the balance and curves at full scale, and then produced the final mold, resulting in a stud that is purposeful yet organic.

Designer Marina Lorenzi spent weeks working with the Neapolitan artisans who made the studs, meticulously considering every shape, size and curve. Meticulous and architectural construction The construction of the Umbra was perfected through meticulous trial and error with Teramo’s artisans. The structure of the bag is made up of a contrast between the sturdy front and back panels, called “quadrants,” and the slightly softer side panels. This duality gives it both presence and elegance. The visible seams are also part of the design, a bold choice that requires perfection. Every stitch, every angle, everything has to be precise. The resulting clear, orderly geometry highlights the exceptional craftsmanship. Italian Calfskin – Soft and Strong The material chosen is smooth and flexible Italian calfskin. It fits beautifully to the structure of the bag without becoming too stiff. This leather has a powdery texture, adding tactile warmth and elegance while retaining the strength necessary for the structured form. A material that embodies the spirit of Umbra – structured yet supple, refined yet everyday. Sculptural circular detail The bag’s poetic focal point is the circular leather detail in the center of the flap. It is not just a decorative ring, but a three-dimensional base with a concave core into which a metal disc is set. The disc is wrapped by hand in square-cut leather and pressed with a roller to form a seamless, smooth, domed surface. All of these steps are done by hand, one by one, by our artisans. It is a process that requires precision, time, and extreme concentration, and it may result in slight differences in curvature, color, or stitching. These minute differences are the proof of true craftsmanship, and no two Umbra bags are the same.
