What is the Red Dot Design Award? This is a world-renowned design award that has been held since 1955. It is organized by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen, based in Essen, Germany, and consists of three categories. The product design division has 51 categories and the best product of the year is selected based on nine criteria, including design innovation, ergonomics,
functionality, durability, and ecology. In 2025, more than 7,900 products were submitted from over 60 countries around the world. The watch was inspired by the birch trees that grow in the Hiraniwa Plateau in Iwate Prefecture, the same region as Shizukuishi. The beauty of the bark, with its irregular patterns, is expressed through an intricate stencil pattern. The design of this watch, which belongs to the Evolution 9 collection, is guided by the Evolution 9 style, which inherits and evolves the Grand Seiko style established by the 44GS, released in 1967. The distortion-free mirror finish achieved by Zaratsu polishing and the delicate hairline finish are alternated, giving it the harmonious shine that is characteristic of the Evolution 9 style.

The big design challenge for this model was how to balance the delicacy unique to dress watches with the strength of this collection. In particular, careful attention was paid to the surface configuration of the side of the case, and the gentle curve that naturally follows the arm and the low center of gravity design make it not only beautiful to look at, but also extremely comfortable to wear. The SLGW003, which was announced at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024, was also nominated in the “Men’s Watch” category of the Geneva Watch Grand Prix that same year. The newly developed hand-wound movement “9SA4” achieves 10 vibrations per second and a maximum power reserve of 80 hours.
