While launching the men’s department and working as chief designer, he invented the “boxer brief,” which combined the characteristics of briefs and boxer shorts, revolutionizing men’s underwear. In 1992, he returned to Ralph Lauren, serving as head designer for Polo Ralph Lauren and developing the Polo Jeans Company. In 2000, the brand John Varvatos was launched and its debut collection was released. At a time when black was the mainstream in the market, the “Blackless Collection” deliberately eliminated black, attracting attention for its unique stance that threw a stone into existing trends. In October of the same year, the first flagship store opened in the SoHo district of New York, and in 2001, the company announced a luxurious collaboration line with Converse. Limited models are released every year. The brand’s designs, which are full of rock taste, such as vintage-processed snake leather Chuck Taylors, glossy suede materials, studs and zippers, have become a hot topic and continue to attract the attention of fashion professionals around the world. In April 2008, the new store opened at 315 Bowery Street, the former site of the legendary rock club CBGB. Aiming to preserve as much of the club’s appearance as possible, the store was decorated with vintage books and high-end stereo equipment, and original band flyers were preserved on the walls. The opening was held as a charity event for VH1’s music support project “Save the Music,” and attracted many visitors. The store still functions as a place where fashion and music culture intersect, hosting a free live event once a month. It has continued to grow steadily since then, and has established itself as a talented men’s brand representing the United States, where modern tailored styles inspired by music such as rock and casual wear are popular.
