What prompted you to start making jewelry while working as the manager of a natural stone store? Akiyama:When I met my wife, I was running a jewelry store. She loved natural stones, so she said she wanted to open a store that combined natural stones and jewelry. I had forgotten about that, but she remembered and when Daikanyama Sherryranticca opened, we started planning MasPender. I’d known Ando for a long time, and my best friend said he was a genius, so it was around the same time that I asked him to be the director, wanting to share Keita Ando’s talent with everyone. Q. I heard that within three years of launching the brand, you’ve created custom jewelry worth over 10 million yen. What kind of efforts led to those requests? Akiyama: Establishing a production environment. When I started the brand, the production environment wasn’t conducive to making the jewelry I wanted, so I started by learning the limits of what I could do and making jewelry within those limits. As I continued to create jewelry, I began working with artisans who possessed a variety of skills. This allowed me to become a team that could satisfy customers with advanced techniques, which gave me the confidence to take on new orders. Q. Are there any difficulties in working with so many craftsmen? Akiyama: Not at all. To me, the craftsmen are like gods. Even with their incredible skills, there are very few opportunities in a lifetime to work on an order worth over 10 million yen. We all worked together, savoring the joy, thinking that it might be our first and last time. That same year, we received another order for custom jewelry worth 30 million yen, and everyone was surprised.

When I started MasPender., my goal was to create at least one red diamond piece of jewelry before I retired. The words the client said to me when I commissioned this piece of jewelry made a lasting impression on me. “I want this red diamond to be the last piece of jewelry I ever make, and I want it to be a design that I can wear all the time.” I thought this was the truth of jewelry. This piece was a reflection of my original purpose of putting all my energy into making jewelry for the people who use it with love. (This answer assumes that red diamonds are mostly purchased for investment purposes and are rarely fashioned into jewelry.) Q. This is your second time exhibiting at TOKYO JEWELRY FES. How do you feel about exhibiting? Akiyama:Many people come to our Daikanyama store because they know about
MasPender., so I’m looking forward to seeing how people who are seeing our jewelry for the first time are impressed by it. Last year, many people came to our Daikanyama store because of this event, so this year I want to do my best to convey the joy of jewelry. Q. What are the highlights of this year’s MasPender.? Akiyama This year, I recently released magatama jewelry, so I would like you to see that, and as with all of my work, it’s best to enjoy listening to the stories and meanings that are embedded in each piece of jewelry.
