We will be holding a workshop in collaboration with AYUMI ADACHI, an artist who has been active overseas and has moved to his hometown, Nishiwaki City, since 2023.We will also be unveiling works that we created with participants at the workshop “Weaving ORIAI” held in Nishiwaki City. In preparation for the event, here is a message from representative Shinme Tamaki. The Expo is at the cutting edge of its time. The first World’s Fair was held in London in 1857, and ever since then it has continued to serve as a venue for exhibitions around the world. It would be a shame not to participate in the Kansai region we live in now. However, rather than just looking at what you’ve created, the message is to have people try it out. As long as we continue to make things, we will hold workshops that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of language, regardless of generation, using the unavoidable problems that will occur. Instead of thinking about it in your head, just try it. In the field of manufacturing, this is of utmost importance. If you just score a goal and then just run, you will only achieve the same thing. What kind of things can you make from a pile of scraps? I want you to experience that scene. What you no longer need turns into something new. https://prcdn.freetls.fastly.net/release_image/52771/25/52771-25-739ad6d227f98b622293a70760594d1a-3900×2603.jpg Expo2025 Osaka/Kansai Expo tamaki niime exhibition May 25th (Sunday) Osaka Yumeshima (Kansai Pavilion Multipurpose Area) In this workshop, conducted in collaboration with AYUMI ADACHI, an artist from Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, where tamaki niime is based, we will transform unwanted items into art using tweezers and cardboard. A workshop similar to hand-weaving, where you join pieces of yarn together to make weft threads and thread them through warp threads stretched over cardboard. Touch the soft fabric and experience the joy of making things. In addition, works created together with participants at the co-creative art activity “Oriai ORIAI”, a workshop held at Nishiwaki City citizen exchange facility Olinas Tsunagaru Studio from March 18th to 22nd, ahead of the opening of the Osaka-Kansai Expo will also be on display. After that, it will be exhibited as art at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, and will be touring exhibitions at various locations including Tamaki Niime Shop & Lab. In addition, we will continue to take on challenges even after the exhibition ends, such as conducting experiments to see how long it takes to return to the soil, or dismantling and sorting the pieces, returning the scraps to thread, and creating new works.

The ultimate destination of all things in this world, which continue to “become and die” moment by moment, is in nature, the earth, and the earth itself. As a result of living without going against the grain, I returned to the land where I was born and raised, thought deeply about myself, my works, and the end of things, and wanted to place myself in the cycle of “local production for local consumption,” which led me to return to my hometown of Nishiwaki. I feel that here at Nishiwaki, I can firmly connect my past and my future. The natural environment, locality, industry, time, and history of Nishiwaki that I was able to reaffirm, along with memories from my childhood and my search for a way of life, expression, and materials that only I can do, have led to my current work, “ORIAI (co-creative art activity).” I hope that the gentle flow will continue so that the works, including mine, can continue to change and be returned to the soil of Nishiwaki in a beautiful manner. Born in Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture in 1972. 1994: Graduated from Osaka University of Arts, Faculty of Arts, Department of Fine Arts, Three-Dimensional Concept Seminar. 1996: Started activities based in Hong Kong. Since 1992, he has exhibited his works in Hyogo, Osaka, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Kyoto, Niigata, Gunma, Miyagi, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Vietnam, France, India, Bulgaria, Portugal, Germany, Armenia, Czech Republic, etc. 2021 Selected for the 24th Taro Okamoto Contemporary Art Award. At the end of 2023, we will be based in our hometown, Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture. 2024 An exhibition will be held at Okanoyama Museum of Art, Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture. We want to correct the distortions of the earth and create a sustainable and healthy cycle. tamaki niime’s challenge is to create products that are close to nature. We renovated an old dyeing factory in Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, the production center of Banshu-ori, and used it as our headquarters, store, and workshop. The young generation works and repairs vintage looms and knitting machines with their own hands, creating
one-of-a-kind items. Using unique shawls and clothing for a long time will also help create a sustainable future.
