The first round of “OHTANI CHARM”, commonly known as “Otani Gacha”, planned by four elementary and junior high school students from the Otani district of Suzu City, an area affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and Noto Heavy Rains, sold out immediately, and the second round is heading to Tokyo. ​ Suzu City Otani Elementary and Junior High School Press release: April 16, 2025 The first round of “OHTANI CHARM”, commonly known as “Otani Gacha”, planned by four elementary and junior high school students from the Otani district of Suzu City, an area affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and Noto Heavy Rains, sold out immediately, and the second round is heading to Tokyo. Wednesday, April 23rd to Friday, April 25th at Nihonbashi Minami Post Office Suzu City Otani Elementary and Junior High School (Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, principal Kaoru Kamata) is running a project proposed by students to “sell handmade products using materials from the local Otani area and donate the proceeds to the Noto Peninsula disaster area”, commonly known as “Otani Gacha” or “OHTANI”. The second edition of “CHARM” will be sold at the Nihonbashi Minami Post Office from April 23rd (Wednesday) to April 25th (Friday).

The first batch was such a huge success that the planned sales sold out immediately! Otani Elementary and Junior High School in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture is a compulsory education school located at the northernmost tip of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. After the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, the number of students in our school has decreased to 5. “We want to do what we can to help Suzu City’s recovery,” the students said, and came up with a system in which they would sell products that could only be made in the Otani area in gacha gachas and donate the proceeds, in order to convey the appeal of the Otani area to as many people as possible. The first batch went on sale in October after last year’s heavy rains on the Noto Peninsula. The products were sold in Ishikawa Prefecture, the Tokyo metropolitan area, and the Tohoku region, and the 500 units that were scheduled for sale were immediately sold out. Otani Elementary and Junior High School sent out one graduate in March, bringing the school’s total number of students to four, and we are planning a second round, with the new 9th graders at the forefront, and sales are finally starting. On the first day of the sale, one 9th grade student on a school trip to Tokyo will be at the Nihonbashi Minami Post Office to witness the sale. All capsules are packed with “feelings for one’s hometown”. OHTANI CHARM started with products using sea glass and shells, but in the second edition, new products have been created to incorporate even more passion. The first is a tassel key chain that hopes for the revival of the Otani District’s “Carp Streamer Festival.” The “Carp Streamer Festival” is an early summer tradition in the Otani area where numerous carp streamers float in the air, but it has not been held since the earthquake. I made this in hopes of its reopening. (*1) The second item is a sticker with words written by the students. OHTANI The catchphrase for CHARM was created by the students. The enthusiasm of the students also got the adults in the community involved, and it was decided that the tassel keychains would be made together with the adults living in the temporary housing adjacent to the school. This is an initiative from the second stage. Children will get adults involved, and through the “Otani Gacha” OHTANI CHARM, they will strengthen local bonds and spread the charm of the Otani area to the outside world. *Made using cloth from carp streamers donated by people in Suzu City who supported the activity. This is a gacha-gacha created by four children studying there to help rebuild the region. Inside the capsule are products that convey the charm of the Otani area, such as handmade accessories made from sea glass and shells. “May the charm of Otani that we love become your talisman (CHARM).” We named it OHTANI CHARM with this wish in mind.
