(Headquarters: 2-21-1 Shibuya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Osamu Kimura), and is operated by Toray Industries, Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Mitsuo Oya, hereafter referred to as “Toray”), Toray Construction Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Osaka, President and CEO: Furukawa) Based on the concept of “GATHERLIN”*1, Masato (hereinafter referred to as “Toray Construction”) will open the KOSUGI Ai Hug (KOSUGI), an agricultural, food, and health complex, for two days, April 19th (Saturday) and April 20th (Sunday), 2025, as a “co-creation of things and things” aiming for a well-being life. iHUG) *2” (operated by Toray Construction, located in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture) held a dyeing experience workshop primarily for elementary school children and their parents. This workshop was held under the concept of “GATHERLIN” as an opportunity to think about the challenges of the sustainable fashion industry and the future of our lives. In addition to the three companies, a local food and beverage business (Natura Co., Ltd.)*3, a club from Tokyo University of Agriculture (hereinafter referred to as “TFT×nodai”)*4, and local parents and children gathered to experience dyeing and farming using waste vegetables. In this workshop, the TFT×nodai students gave an easy-to-understand explanation of the manufacturing process behind studio CLIP’s original apron (made using Toray’s nylon material TRUSSAIR(TM)*5, which is dyed with ingredients extracted from onion skins that are scheduled to be discarded), and then the students actually experienced how to dye gauze handkerchiefs with onions. Additionally, while the dyed handkerchiefs were drying, we also held a sand cultivation experience at the farm (Tore Farm) within Kosgi Aihagu. In this way, we devised ways to allow even young children to have fun and participate, and as a result, 21 groups of 53 parents and children participated over two days. We received comments from the parents and children who participated in the workshop, such as, “It was a fun and educational event, and I’m glad that the children participated with smiles on their faces,” and “It was a valuable experience because it’s not often people get to experience things like dyeing and cultivation.” TFT×nodai students, who were in charge of the planning and operation, said, “I felt great excitement and a sense of accomplishment as I participated in the project and saw the plan take shape.I would like to continue to actively participate in such initiatives.” In this workshop, we believe that through experiences in places close to daily life, we were able to realize that choosing new materials, products, and services made from discarded items is an action that can improve the environment. The three companies, Adastria, Toray, and Toray Construction, will continue to contribute to the realization of a well-being society through “co-creation of things and things,” using the knowledge gained from this workshop as a source of inspiration. I felt this was a valuable event that allowed me to have direct conversations with customers (general consumers) that I don’t normally interact with. Our material As a manufacturer, we can directly introduce TRUSSAIR(TM) and hear customers’ real opinions about our products. It was a meaningful opportunity. Seeing the fun faces of the participants made me feel glad that I held the event. ■Comment from Sawa Uchida, Deputy Director, Toray Farm Business Promotion Office, Toray Construction Co., Ltd. Inspired by studio CLIP’s “Okeiko CLIP”. As CSR activities, these workshops often end up being free events, but we hope to continue holding them by making them paid events. I was also greatly helped by the efforts of the nodai×TFT students. I feel that the students’ ingenuity made it possible to shorten the distance between companies and end consumers. I would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and participation. ■About Toray Industries, Inc.
