Rather than the symbolic Tokyo scenery of neon lights and crowds, Y’s true essence is visually brought to light by revealing the city’s structure. “Tokyo Girls” depicts anonymity, tension, and the unreal theatricality that lurks in the city. “I wasn’t interested in the Tokyo that everyone imagines. I didn’t want neon lights or intersections. I wanted to capture the emptiness, the pressure, the surveillance. I wanted to capture the strange elegance that lurks there,” says Vadukur. This is not just a fashion photo. It is a performance. Actor Ai Hashimoto appears alongside the three performers not as models, but as performers in a psychological landscape.
