Particular attention was paid to the ancient city walls, built in the 14th century. Made of gray stone and brick, these walls are among the largest in the world. Partial repairs over the years have revealed strong horizontal grain. This layering echoes the traditional tiled roofs found on the surrounding gates. Like the brick walls, the tiled roof is made from gray clay mixed with sand. These elements create a unique striation pattern reminiscent of geological strata. In the store design, this texture is reinterpreted not with bricks but with hand-galvanized corrugated steel sheets. Arranged vertically, they reach a maximum height of 5 meters. They express the scale and material rhythm of ancient architecture in a modern way, incorporating the strength and presence of Nanjing’s architectural heritage into the space.
