[Nippon Washo Holdings Co., Ltd.] The future spun by the phantom domestic silkworm “Taiping Chang’an”

Nippon Kimoso Holdings Co., Ltd. Press release: March 4, 2025 The future spun by the phantom domestic silkworm “Taiping Chang’an” ~“Reborn The Silk Project” is expanding~ The Reborn The Silk Project, a sericulture support project undertaken by Nippon Washo Holdings Co., Ltd. (listed on TSE Standard/Securities code 2499, head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo) as part of its CSR activities, is now in its third year and continues to steadily expand. This project will recreate the domestically produced silkworm “Taiping x Chang’an” (Taiping x Chang’an), which has long been regarded as a fantasy, and will build a distribution network for domestically produced silk by raising the silkworms, spinning, weaving, and dyeing them into fabrics, and delivering them as kimonos and obi to kimono enthusiasts.

In the future, we aim to grow 200 boxes (approximately 4 million grains) of Taiping Chang’an (Taiping x Chang’an) per year, contributing to support for the domestic sericulture industry. Keiko Takeuchi, a sericulture farmer in Nagano Prefecture, and Ashizawa Sericulture in Yamanashi Prefecture, which has a history of over 150 years, cooperated in raising rare breeds of silkworms. In particular, through our collaboration with “Japan Silkworkers.net,” run by the “Japan Sustainable Silk Association,” which was launched by Ashizawa Sericulture’s president Yohei Ashizawa, we are creating new business relationships with partner companies and expanding the circle of support that will connect the domestic sericulture industry to the future. Through this connection, we will continue to contribute to the development of a sustainable Japanese silk industry. The project will also move on to a new stage this spring. It has been decided that the kimonos and obi created by the next generation of craftsmen using raw silk from Taiping and Chang’an (Taiping x Chang’an), which were born from the “Reborn The Silk Project,” will be introduced at the “1st National Skills Exhibition (Japanese Crafts and National Skills Preservation Association Exhibition)” sponsored by the Japan Crafts and National Skills Preservation Society. The national sports exhibition is scheduled to travel to 13 venues nationwide, starting with the Takamatsu traveling exhibition in March. Please come to the venue and take a look at the many beautiful works with an elegant luster and supple texture spun by the legendary silkworms. Image

(currently Katakura Industries Co., Ltd.), which contributed to Japan’s silk industry. They were highly praised not only in Japan but also all over the world, but in modern times they have become a myth, and their precious eggs have been handed down to the Dainippon Sericulture Society for preservation. The threads spun by silkworms in Taiping Chang’an (Taiping x Chang’an) are said to be thin and strong, resulting in beautiful fabrics that are both firm and light.
