A. Lange & Söhne Press release: April 2, 2025 A. Lange & Söhne releases new work “Minute Repeater Perpetual” at Watches & Wonders Transparent tone that echoes forever A. Lange & Söhne has equipped the Minute Repeater Perpetual with two of its most sophisticated complications. A newly developed hand-wound movement brings to life the unusual and ambitious combination of a minute repeater and a perpetual calendar. This expertly crafted timepiece is crafted from 950 platinum, complemented by an in-house enamel dial. Limited to 50 pieces worldwide.

Lange & Söhne once again presents a model equipped with a minute repeater. This time, it is a combination with a perpetual calendar. Each of these complications is a technical feat on its own, but combining the two was a huge challenge. Because it takes great technical expertise and craftsmanship to precisely coordinate and harmonize all mechanisms. Classic minute repeater with special features When the slider attached to the left side of the case is operated, a hammering mechanism is activated, which indicates the hour on the hour with a low tone, the quarter hour with two tones, and the number of minutes that have passed since the last quarter hour with a higher tone. The impressive duet, played by two gongs tuned to high and low pitches, consists of a total of 720 different repertoires, one for each minute of the 12-hour cycle. Through the sapphire crystal caseback, you can enjoy a detailed view of the harmonious orchestral movement of hammers and gongs that create the soothing tones. An elaborate system of precisely moving racks, snail-shaped cams, levers and gears controls the 194-part mechanism. To optimize the operability and functionality of the classic minute repeater, the hammering mechanism has been enhanced with a more complex mechanism. During the 14 minute period when there is no need to strike the 15th minute after striking the hour, a normal repeater would strike the minute after striking the hour. In order to prevent this gap from occurring, a temporary pause skip function has been installed. A protection mechanism is also included to prevent the minute repeater from operating with the crown pulled out and damaging the hammer mechanism. This prevents the crown from being pulled out while the hammering mechanism is operating. And finally, the patented hammer blocker. This is a device that momentarily holds the hammer in its initial position each time it strikes the gong, preventing the hammer from hitting the gong again due to recoil. The art of transparent tone Like all timepieces equipped with a hammering mechanism, the Minute Repeater Perpetual has been designed to the highest standards of acoustic quality and has a unique timbre. The hand-tuned gongs harmonize perfectly with the acoustic properties of the platinum case material, creating a transparent, clear, and lingering tone. A very
sophisticated technique is required to complete a minute repeater. It requires a particularly keen sense of hearing and extremely
sophisticated manual work. Lange’s master watchmakers work with care and attention to ensure that all parts fit together in harmony. When it comes to hammers, the material, shape, size, weight, and hardness are important, and above all, just like a piano, the key is striking.

Lange & Söhne, said: “As new movements have been developed, the hammer As with other models equipped with a striking mechanism, we were able to design it so that you can experience the perfect tone immediately after production.Combined with the acoustic properties of platinum, we were able to achieve unparalleled resonance and sound intensity. Perpetual Calendar with Lange Outsize Date While the minute repeater marks the moment, the perpetual calendar’s technological excellence continues far into the future. This mechanism has been able to accurately display the date, day of the week, and month for decades, and even accommodates leap years. The calendar display needs to be corrected only on March 1, 2100, which is not a leap year due to Gregorian calendar rules. This also applies to the moon phase display, which faithfully reproduces the orbital period of the Earth’s satellites, so the display only needs to be corrected once every 122.6 years. This extremely sophisticated yet easy-to-operate mechanism, typical of Lange, allows all calendar displays to be advanced simultaneously with a single adjustment button.

The white gold dial filled with black enamel is time-consumingly crafted in the A. Lange & Söhne workshop. The perfectly polished black surface provides an elegant display of the display and Lange’s signature outsized date, creating a sharp contrast with the background and ensuring excellent legibility. The subdial at 9 o’clock shows the day of the week and the 24-hour display, while the second subdial at 3 o’clock shows the month and leap year. The third subdial at 6 o’clock features a small seconds and moon phase display featuring a gold 750 moon surrounded by over 100 hand-carved stars. This special timepiece has additional details that make it stand out. All four dials are decorated with delicate white gold edging. This border is placed between the outsized date and the Roman numerals on the main dial, and separates the inner and outer display areas on the subdials. New in-house caliber with artisanal finishing The sapphire-crystal case back reveals the intricate construction and high level of craftsmanship of the newly developed Lange in-house caliber L122.2. The 640 parts that make up the hand-wound movement are all finished with the typical A. Lange & Söhne finish, even if they are hidden from view. The beauty highlight is the hand-engraved balance cock and the swan-neck spring above it, which are hand-engraved by the craftsmen. Additionally, the adjustment screw on the side ensures precise adjustment of the escapement and governor. The German silver three-quarter plate is engraved with black rhodium and features four screw-fastened gold chatons adorning the grained surface. Although most of the repeater and perpetual calendar mechanisms are hidden beneath the dial, the most important elements of the hammering mechanism, the two hand-curved gongs and two hammers that frame the movement, are aesthetically pleasing. What is even more remarkable about the hammer is its elaborate finish, which requires a lot of time and effort, including black polishing. This causes the incoming light to be reflected in one direction. When viewed from one angle, the surface appears jet black, but when viewed from other angles, it has a mirror-like shine. The barrel bridge, centrifugal governor bridge and hammer bridge have a sunburst finish, creating a visual presence. The most dynamic component of the movement, the centrifugal governor is mounted in an overhung position and is virtually silent during operation, rotating at over 2,000 revolutions per minute when the hammer mechanism is activated. This maintains a uniform rhythm of the bells.
