As part of this effort, we have launched “Upcycle Action” in the spring of 2024. “Upcycle Action” is a project that leverages the creative power of a fashion company to create new value from clothing that is no longer worn. In the first installment, we created upcycled works using denim. In this second edition, we are creating 95 new pieces using shirt fabric. All one-of-a-kind pieces will be on sale from April 7th (Monday) on Onward Group’s official fashion mail order site “Onward Closet” and from April 25th (Friday) at “Onward Reuse Park Kichijoji.” ■ Background of starting “Upcycle Action” Since 2009, Onward Group has been conducting the “Onward Green Campaign” to take back our own clothing. This year marks the 17th year of the campaign, and we have collected approximately 8.84 million items of clothing from approximately 1.7 million customers. Our policy is to reuse and recycle the clothing we collect, and to circulate it instead of disposing of it. Online collection will begin in spring 2023, and the number of participants is increasing. Meanwhile, up until now we have been recycling recycled materials to make blankets, work gloves, and solid fuel, but we have started an “upcycle action” as a new way to utilize the materials, leveraging the creative power unique to fashion companies. Employees are participating as creators in this project. It is a place where employees with diverse personalities can express their own ideas and designs freely, transcending the boundaries of business. We set the prices for the works we create ourselves, return 90% of the profits to the creators, and donate the remaining 10% to the Japanese Red Cross Society. By fiscal 2024, we have collected approximately 8.84 million items of clothing from approximately 1.7 million customers. The collected clothing is recycled into RPF (solid fuel) and used as an alternative energy source, as well as recycled yarn that is used as raw material for textile products to produce blankets and work gloves. With the cooperation of the Japanese Red Cross Society, the blankets are used to provide support to disaster-stricken areas and developing countries both domestically and internationally. We distribute work gloves in a variety of situations, including disaster relief, forest conservation, and educational activities. In addition, some clothing that can still be used is offered at a charity price at the
environmental concept shop “Onward Reuse Park” (Kichijoji, Tokyo/EC site), and the proceeds are used for sustainable activities. Image
