After the first edition of “OHTANI CHARM”, commonly known as “Otani Gacha”, planned by elementary and junior high school students in the Otani district of Suzu City, an area affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and Noto Heavy Rains, the second edition is finally here! ​ Suzu City Otani Elementary and Junior High School Press release: April 10, 2025 After the first edition of “OHTANI CHARM”, commonly known as “Otani Gacha”, planned by elementary and junior high school students in the Otani district of Suzu City, an area affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and Noto Heavy Rains, the second edition is finally here! On sale from April 18th (Friday) to 20th (Sunday) at Roadside Station “Suzunari” Suzu City Otani Elementary and Junior High School (Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, principal Kaoru Kamata) is running a project proposed by students to “sell handmade products using materials from the local Otani area and donate the proceeds to the Noto Peninsula disaster area”, commonly known as “Otani Gacha” or “OHTANI”. The second edition of “CHARM” will be on sale from April 18th (Friday) at the roadside station “Suzunari” in Suzu City. Limited edition of 40 pieces.

The first batch will sell out immediately. It attracted attention not only within the prefecture but also in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Tohoku. Otani Elementary and Junior High School in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture is a compulsory education school located at the
northernmost tip of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. After the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, the number of students in our school has decreased to 5. “We want to do what we can to help rebuild Suzu City,” the students stood up and said, “We want to do what we can to help rebuild Suzu City.” In order to convey the appeal of the Otani area, we devised a system in which we sell products that can only be made in the Otani area in gacha-gacha boxes and donate the proceeds. The first batch went on sale in October after last year’s heavy rains on the Noto Peninsula. The product was featured on TV, newspapers, and other mass media not only in Ishikawa Prefecture but also in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Tohoku, where sales were carried out. We received support from social media and word of mouth, and the 500 pieces we planned to sell were immediately sold out. Otani Elementary and Junior High School sent out one graduate in March, bringing the school’s total number of students to four, and we are planning a second batch of products, starting with the new 9th graders, and are about to start selling them. The second step involves creating products with local people involved! We have also added new products that express our feelings for the Otani area, making it even more powerful. Two new products have been added to the second edition. The first is a tassel key chain that prays for the revival of Otani’s carp streamers. In hopes of resuming the Carp Streamer Festival, an early summer tradition in the Otani area, which has not been held since the earthquake, we made these using carp streamer cloth donated by people in Suzu City who supported this event. (*We do not use carp streamers from the Otani area.) The second item is a sticker with a catchphrase written by the students. I came up with a catchphrase for OHTANI CHARM and made it into a sticker. As part of our second initiative, we made tassel keychains together with people living in temporary housing in the Otani area. The enthusiasm of the children will involve adults, and through the “Otani Gacha” OHTANI CHARM, we will strengthen the bonds of the community and spread the charm of the Otani area to the outside world.
