TOKYO” in Kagurazaka, Tokyo. SUKAJAN KIMONO ​ TAILOR TOYO is the main brand that symbolizes Toyo Enterprises, which has been making sukajans for more than half a century, with its predecessor being Minato Shokai, which invented the souvenir jacket (commonly known as sukajan), which is also called “clothes that originated in Japan.” This time, “YAMATO Lab.”, a project by Yamato, a kimono specialty store founded in 1916, took on the challenge of planning and developing a collaboration item, empathizing with the history and background of Sukajan, which was born in the chaos immediately after the war, and TAILOR TOYO’s attitude of continuing to evolve and pass it on as a culture rather than a passing fad. We propose a new kimono shape created by fusion with sukajan. The event will be the first opportunity for you to actually get your hands on the collaboration item “SUKAJAN KIMONO.” In addition to special collaboration items, we will also be releasing seven original items inspired by sukajan and embroidered on vintage kimono in limited quantities. In addition, in cooperation with TAILOR TOYO, a special exhibition will be held to learn about the historical background and techniques of Sukajan. This is a special collaboration item between TAILOR TOYO, which has been making Skajans for over half a century, and YAMATO Lab. The embroidery is a “double A-side” design, with the patterns carefully selected from among the vintage sukajans in TAILOR TOYO’s collection, and the A-sides (the main side) of the two garments are incorporated into the first garment. The black and black body, which is based on the vintage from the early 1950s, depicts a white dragon, while the green and ivory body vividly depicts the spring scenery of Japan.

Inspired by the “Hakutoku Kimono”, in which scraps are sewn together in hopes of a child’s healthy growth, this is a special series that features original embroidery on a jacket made of vintage kimono stitched together like a patchwork, and a haori made from fine tie-dyed kimonos that are rare in modern times. The pattern is embroidered with motifs such as the crane, which has been used in auspicious patterns since ancient times as a symbol of longevity in Japan, the rabbit, which is said to bring success, prosperity, and fortune, and the tiger, which has the meaning of warding off evil due to its strong vitality and strong roaring appearance.These motifs are incorporated into the Skajan-like pattern. The souvenir jacket (skajan) originated shortly after the war, when American soldiers embroidered their jackets with oriental patterns (eagles, tigers, dragons) and the names of their units and bases to commemorate their time stationed in Japan. They were commercialized as souvenirs and sold at PXs (abbreviation for Post Exchange, a common name for shops inside US military bases) around the country. At that time, Minato Shokai, the predecessor company of Taylor Toyo (Toyo Enterprises), was delivering apparel such as souvenir jackets to U.S. military bases, and in the 1950s, when souvenir jacket production was at its peak, the company accounted for 95% of deliveries.
